Fuel Storage
In order to be secure, the smaller fuel canisters or the big refueling tank needs to be stored away from the main building or complex. Adding to the safety aspect, it is vital that "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed in the area. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a secure enclosure which could just be accessed by authorized personnel. It is important for the operator's safety, and everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly followed.
The fuel enclosure itself has to be protected from vehicle impact. Utilizing retaining systems such as concrete bumpers for instance, can accomplish this job. Other retaining methods can be utilized. It is also vital to always have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. Additionally, anybody who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also needs to be trained to use the fire extinguisher safely and effectively. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a lift truck must be correctly trained. This training includes a classroom portion in addition to hands-on training. After finishing the training session, the individual has to be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also covers the correct way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving as well as site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
There must be a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS center located within the facility where the lift truck is operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals which are used on site. This will also include the propane that is used to refuel the unit, along with the acid in the lift truck battery.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all employees at all times. If any exposure incident happens for example, the individual has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is required, to must be given without any delay. Generally, if you are uncertain if medical care is needed, as a general rule; have a physician examine the injury if you fear it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
