Forklift Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is provided by huge industrial batteries that need to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety procedures should always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is essential to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a forklift battery. Complete protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the station should not be blocked and an injured employee must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When in the vicinity of a battery and charging area, open flames are prohibited. Never permit objects such as matches or lighters to be utilized while somebody is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging place correctly ventilated. The recharging process can release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
